Warren County is a mountainous area, located in the western edge of New Jersey. While it is part of the New York City metropolitan area, it is generally considered the eastern border of the Lehigh Valley. Warren County is located in two valleys of the great appalachian Valley; the Kittatinny Valley in the north and the Lehigh Valley in the south. Being a mountainous region, the county is known for its hunting and fishing, as well as its nature parks and landmarks.
The mountainous Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (named for a portion of the Delaware River that cuts through the Appalachian Mountains) is a preferred spot for hunting, fishing, swimming and rock climbing. Naturalists will also be wowed by the nearby Lakota Wolf Preserve, a protected area where wolves can be viewed in a natural setting for the first time in over a century. There's also Jenny Jump State Forest, where visitors can view the Kittatinny Mountains and the Water Gap to the west, and the vast Great Meadows to the east. Located within Jenny Jump State Forest is the Greenwood Observatory, which features a telescope perched at 1,100 feet and happens to be located in one of New Jersey's few "dark sky" (relatively light source pollution-free) locations - placing viewers amidst the stars. An equally dramatic landscape is the Marble Mountain Natural Resource Area, home of the Marble Mountain Mine (Ice Cave). Visitors who come to the Mine on a cold day are in for a real visual surprise - as the Mine's floor freezes, stalagmites form from ice, resembling rows and rows of old-fashioned milk bottles.
