Burlington Township, NJ, a History Buff’s Paradise

Burlington Township was established in 1677 and was incorporated in 1798. The region has a deep history involving Quakers, who traveled from Europe to settle in the New World. Located in the southern central region of New Jersey, Burlington Township has a growing population of just over 24,000 and a median income of $91,500.

Burlington Township has many unique historic sites, with much of it centered around the wonderful town of Burlington. Situated on the banks of the Delaware River, Burlington is a great walking town for tours and has 40 historical buildings. Among them include:

  • Hutchinson-Revell House. Constructed in 1685 by a local Quaker, this house has a lot of history. A young Benjamin Franklin stayed for a few days on his way to Philadelphia and was sold gingerbread. This led to the house sometimes being referred to as the Gingerbread House.
  • The Library Company of Burlington. In 1758, the library published its catalog of books, the first in the country to do so. It is the oldest continually operating library in New Jersey, and the seventh oldest in the nation.
  • Burlington Pharmacy Building. Since 1854 it has been serving the city and nearby communities and is the oldest continually operating pharmacy in New Jersey. The building was also a stop for the Underground Railway, and where John Greenleaf Whittier denounced slavery from the doorstep.
  • The Oneida Boat Club. Organized in 1873, it was named for one of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy and is the oldest continually operating boat club located on the Delaware River.
  • The 1783 Burlington (Quaker) Meeting House. The first generation of Quaker immigrants met here. There are still many ancient relics here, including sconces, a pine writing table made in 1698, iridescent window glass, and much of the original ironwork.
  • James Fenimore Cooper House. Built in 1780, it has 5 museum rooms and was the birthplace of the author, famous for novels such as “The Last of the Mohicans” and “The Deerslayer”.
  • The Lily Inn. Downtown historic Burlington even has its own lodging—the Lily Inn—a 300-year-old mansion turned into a bed and breakfast.

The town of Burlington is truly wonderful to tour for history buffs!

The Burlington-Bristol Bridge is another amazing structure. Built in 1930, the truss bridge crosses the Delaware River from Bristol Township, PA to Burlington, NJ. Over 2,3000 feet in length, it is comprised of several different types of structures: a long through–truss span at the middle of the river, other adjacent through–truss spans, and stringer and deck truss spans. The center span is lifted by the action of two large concrete slabs of slightly greater weight than the lifted span. They are set in motion to lift the bridge by a very slight action of the motors, as gravity does the rest. It really is a visually appealing site to see.
