Quakertown, PA was originally known as Richland, and the “Great Swamp”, a 518–acre, Native American-occupied wilderness. Located 2 miles southeast of Quakertown, it is a wetland formed by water perched near the soil surface that features a diverse habitat including open water, shrub wetland, and cattail marsh, and is home to a large great blue heron rookery. No wonder this was a great area for the Native Americans to settle in.

There is so much to do for people who enjoy the outdoors in the Quakertown area, besides touring all the wonderful historic landmarks in the downtown area. There are 5 parks to choose from (Molasses Creek Park, Main Street Park, Great Blue Heron Park, Veteran’s Park, and Quakertown Memorial Park ), where a variety of activities are available. Activities include basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts, picnic areas and pavilions baseball fields, a skating pond, walking and bicycle paths (some with exercise stations)  fishing, and one even has a historic baseball stadium. In addition to these 5 parks, Free Fall Action Park is a 47,000 square-foot park that offers a huge concrete skate park that has large flow blows, a traditional pool, a street section, rails, vertical ramps, and a 100–foot bowl with lights that allows the park to stay open after dark. The park also has 2 hockey rinks that, in the winter are filled and frozen for ice hockey and ice skating.

The Wonders of Nockamixon State Park

Next, there is the wondrous Nockamixon State Park, a 55,286–acre park that includes the 1,450–acre Lake Nockamixon. Numerous activities include:

  • A popular paved bicycle trail with great views of the lake, waterfall, and the Old Mill Pond.
  • 18-hole disc golf course.
  • Boating. Docks for 648 boats along with storage rental spaces. The lake is great for sailboats, motorboats, catamarans, windsurfs, kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and paddle boats. Rentals are also available for some of these items.
  • Fishing, Warm water fishing.
  • Hunting. 3,500 acres available during hunting season.
  • Park Pool. A half–acre pool with 2 water slides.
  • Wildlife Watching. Over 250 bird species, ducks, geese, grebes, swans, loons, migrating waterfowl and raptors, and much more.
  • Winter Recreation. Cross-country skiing, ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, snowshoes.
  • There are also 10 modern cabins with electricity available to rent throughout the year. ! Each has a living area, dining area, kitchen with appliances, toilets, shower, fire pit, grill, and picnic table.
  • Scenic Vista. One of the trails offers a scenic view of the dam spillway. In the sinter, it freezes into a myriad of colors. Spectacular.

Finally, very near Nockamixon State Park is Top Rock Trail at Haycock Mountain. A great rock scramble! A short trail (only 3 quarters of a mile to the top), but difficult. Climbing up those rocks is for hikers who like challenges!
