Originally named “Coryell’s Ferry” after the owner of the ferry business, New Hope sits on only 1.4 acres and has a population of just over 2,600. The town is located on the west bank of the Delaware River at the confluence with Aquetong Creek, and a canal stretching 60 miles runs through the heart of New Hope.

So why is it so popular for a small town? New Hope is home to dozens of art galleries, fine antique shops, several museums, nationally acclaimed craft shops and restaurants, and hundreds of historic buildings. New Hope was named the # 1 small town for arts and culture in the United States by Travel + Leisure and the New York Post, as part of their “America’s Best Small Towns “ series.   Historically, New Hope was where Broadway theater shows were tested and fine-tuned, and many notable entertainers bought weekend homes in the area. The Bucks County Playhouse was founded in 1939 and quickly became the most famous theater in America. The Bucks County Playhouse is still in operation today, and artists welcome the opportunity to work on the same historic stage where Grace Kelly, Helen Hayes, Kitty Carlisle, Alan Alda, Lisa Minelli, Dick Van Dyke, and many other famous artists performed.

New Hope's tourism is also greatly enhanced by its being barely over an hour's drive from Philadelphia and New York City.

New Hope also became a popular gay resort in the 1950s. Today, it is the gay–friendly centerpiece of Bucks County and is home to many LGBTQ+-friendly businesses.
