King of Prussia is a great area to visit, highlighted by the wondrous Valley Forge National Historical Park, the winter camp of George Washington, and the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The park has 3500 acres of meadows, woodlands, and monuments commemorating the sacrifice and perseverance of the Continental Army troops. The Continental Army occupied the area, which was a natural defensive plateau, from December 19, 1977 until June of 1978. What unfolded is incredible. By February 1978, the location and the fact that it was wintertime created the inability to replenish supplies. Therefore, there was a shortage of food, clothing, and shoes. To combat the winter conditions and lack of proper clothing, the army built 1,500 log cabin shelters in a parallel line, with miles of trenches constructed around the cabins, and made a state-of-the-art bridge over the Schuylkill River. So basically, 12,000 soldiers and 400 women and children built the 4th largest city in the colonies at the time. The army also made makeshift clothing and shoes and created meals from whatever they could find to cook in the cabins. Still, the conditions and lack of proper food and clothing caused almost 3,000 soldiers to be declared unfit for duty and had to be replaced with healthy soldiers in March, once the weather improved. Sadly, in addition to the soldiers lost by the lack of food and clothing, influenza and typhoid spread rampant throughout the encampment, and over 2,000 people died. Today the encampment still stands as a testimony to the resilience, adaptability, and sense of duty of the Continental Army.

Fun Activities in King of Prussia

King of Prussia has many other great tourist attractions, including the enormous King of Prussia Mall. This is easily one of our top 3 malls to shop year-round, especially during the winter. While many malls across the country are struggling or closing due to the pandemic effects and the increase in online shopping, the King of Prussia Mall continues to thrive. The mall did a 140,000-square-foot connector expansion which linked the 2 huge, main structures, along with adding a state-of-the-art parking facility. This upgrade increased the mall’s footprint, as it added 50 stores and helped revitalize its appeal in the changing retail environment. Today, the mall sits on almost 2.3 million square feet and contains over 450 stores and 30 restaurants, many of which are unique. By the most recent count, the King of Prussia Mall had over 22 million annual visitors.

Entertainment City

The mall has also adjusted with the times, offering more experience-based attractions. Kitchenware retailer Sur la Table offers shoppers the ability to sign up for cooking classes throughout the month, and soon Camp is opening, offering a family-friendly interactive experience based on children’s programming. Also, Netflix House plans to open one of its two locations in the country at the King of Prussia Mall, offering immersive activities associated with their streamer programming. The King of Prussia Mall has positioned itself to be one of the top shopper destinations for years to come.
