In what has almost become an annual rite of passage, the Hotel Bethlehem has been named the “Best Historic Hotel” in the country for a record 4th time. Even more impressive, it became the 1st hotel to be named USA Today’s Best Historic Hotel in America for the 4th straight year! The History of Hotel Bethlehem

The Hotel Bethlehem was originally built in 1922 by Charles M. Schwab, the steel magnate of American Steel and the Bethlehem Steel Company, to house his clients from the world-famous Bethlehem Steel. It was the crown jewel of Bethlehem, with its lavish, ornate structure and amenities, and featured a barbershop, a shoe store, a club room, a spectacular cigar shop, and a wondrous restaurant. Some of the dignitaries that stayed at the Hotel Bethlehem included Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart (who flew her plane to Bethlehem to attend a banquet in her honor), Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Shirley Temple, Phyllis Diller, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett, Tenzin Gyatso (the 14th Dalai Lama), Muhammad Ali, Jack Nicklaus, Jesse Jackson, Henry Kissinger, and numerous presidents – including FDR, Dwight Eisenhower, JFK, Gerald Ford, and Bill Clinton, among others.

Hotel Bethlehem Today

Today the Historic Hotel Bethlehem continues to be one of the celebrated vacation retreats in Pennsylvania and all of the United States. The hotel proudly displays its story in the “Hall of Fame History” down in the lower lobby.
