In recent years, Lehigh Valley’s bustling economy has become a popular talking point for both locals and media outlets. This region of Pennsylvania was once a metropolis for the ever-growing steel industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This was ushered in by the development of the Lehigh Canal, serving as a highway for goods to be exported.

Towards the later half of the 20th century, however, the region experienced a significant decline in steel production. Bethlehem Steel – a major employer in the region – filed for bankruptcy, and with that many jobs in the area dissipated. Lehigh Valley quickly became a rust belt.

Lately, though, numerous industries and manufacturers have reentered the area, pivoting the region back to its economically prosperous state. This was detailed in a recent Marketplace radio program. Marketplace host David Brancaccio praised the region for overcoming its industrial adversity.

What Industries are Booming?

Although steel is long gone and production has been moved to other parts of the world, Lehigh Valley has seen the expansion of many mainstream manufacturing companies, as detailed by Marketplace radio. Of special note are the Ocean Spray Bottling plant, an Amazon fulfillment center, and a FedEx Ground mega hub.

The radio broadcast focuses on Spot & Tango, a pet wellness company that announced it would be establishing a production facility in the area. This project was anticipated to create nearly 100 new jobs for the local community. Don Cunningham, President & CEO of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, explained on the radio show that Lehigh Valley is a prime place for new manufacturing because of its proximity to many major metropolitan areas. In fact, a third of U.S. consumers can reach the area in a day’s travel, making the location very alluring to companies, according to Cunningham.
