Bethlehem has long been a hidden gem and a beloved getaway for Lehigh Valley residents. Now this charming town is getting greater recognition throughout the state! The Christmas City has been recently named one of the “Most Charming Towns and Small Cities in Pennsylvania” by TravelMag.
Whether you’re a longtime local family or are thinking about moving to the Lehigh Valley, you won’t want to miss this award-winning city!
What Makes Bethlehem Special?
Many people who think of the Lehigh Valley tend to think first of heavy manufacturing and industry. After all, there’s no name more synonymous with American industry than Bethlehem Steel! In fact, the storied history of Bethlehem is a big part of its modern-day charm, as historic steel manufacturing plants provide a stunning backdrop for a wide variety of family-friendly gatherings.
In Bethlehem’s Southside neighborhood, an abandoned Bethlehem Steel plant now serves as a 10-acre campus for concerts, festivals, and other cultural events. This location (the ArtsQuest Levitt Pavilion) hosts the annual Musikfest every August—the largest free admission music festival in the entire country. Its popularity expanded the venue across most of Southside and into neighboring Northside as well.
Across town on the Northside are many equally charming historic buildings, including over a dozen sites dating back 300 years and more. This small town was home to the American colonies’ first waterworks, a precursor to the modern municipal water system that still exists in the city today.
