As more and more businesses are returning to in-office work, designing spaces that help to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses is a priority. The change from wide-open offices isn’t the only change. Many companies are making updates throughout their offices to protect their employees now, during the time of Covid, and in the future.
Office Layouts
When considering the overall office layout, planners are keeping social distancing in mind. If more enclosed offices aren’t an option, spacing open-space workstations further apart is another way to go. Also, opting for full-height walls, rather than half-height walls, between cubicles is another way to support social distancing.
For conference rooms, you’ll want the rooms to be spacious enough to accommodate seating placed further apart than normal. While this will not always be needed, it’s good to design the option into the space so it’s there when it is needed.
HVAC Filtration Systems
Many offices already have a quality filtration system in place. In that case, it’s just a matter of having those systems thoroughly inspected to ensure they are in proper working order before everyone returns to work.
If an office does not already have a filtration system, installing one—which can typically be done by adding it to an existing HVAC system—provides additional protection.
UV Lighting
Some planners are installing UV lighting which can be left on overnight to help sterilize the workspaces. Keep in mind that not all UV lighting is equally effective—particularly when it comes to Covid-19—so be sure to invest in UV lighting that will deliver the best results.
Regular Disinfecting
While this isn’t part of the office design, it is a change many companies are making. Having the office professionally disinfected on a regular basis is a step that gives peace of mind to employees and helps to give employers peace of mind that they are doing what they can to protect their staff.
