Knowing more about the history of our town means getting in touch with who we are as residents of Boyertown. An Amazing Discovery

Five years ago, the executive director of the Colebrookdale Railroad, Nathaniel C. Guest, made an astonishing discovery in an old farmhouse in New Jersey. Dozens of turn-of-the-last-century gas lamps were left inside of the abandoned building—a relic of old New Jersey.

Guest purchased the gas lamps from the owner of the farm with the idea to have them installed in Boyertown. With the Boyertown Station in mind, Guest was convinced that the old gas lamps belonged near the Washington and Third train depot and rallied for it to happen. Luckily, he was able to acquire them—even successfully outbidding men from Disney’s Magic Kingdom, who were then planning on installing the lamps at Walt Disney World in Florida.

The Restoration of the First Two Lamps in Boyertown

The project started in the summer of 2017. Volunteers from around the community began digging trenches to house the gas lines, and the good men from UGI Utilities, Inc. helped with the hook-ups of the gas lamps to the street. Everything was done with the love for the town in mind, so the service was provided by helpful Boyertown volunteers—such as David John, a Bucks County metal artisan who specializes in the restoration of antique lamps.

It was December last year when the first two of the 50 gas lamps were installed. A beautiful lighting ceremony took place, where members of the community gathered to watch and be part of such an iconic moment. Once all of the 50 lamps are restored, residents will be able to enjoy a ride down memory lane to witness what Boyertown might have looked in the late 19th and early 20th century.
