Like many cities in Pennsylvania, the borough of Ambler was born from land that was purchased from William Penn back in the early 18th century. Originally settled by William and George Harmer, the community eventually grew to become the Village of Wissahickon, named after the creek that ran through the area. The next century saw exponential industrial growth in the village, but it wasn’t until 1856 that the community experienced an event that would change the course of its history—The Great Train Wreck of 1856.

In the morning of July 17, 1856, a northbound train on the North Pennsylvania Railroad Line collided head on with a southbound train running on the same track. More than 1,000 passengers were on board at the time of the collision, and the impact of the wreck was heard up to five miles away from the scene. A woman named Mary Ambler became the hero of the village that day, as news of the wreck spread to her home, and she made her way down to the site to provide rescue and relief support. In part due to her lifesaving efforts, only 59 people succumbed to their injuries that day.

Mary Ambler passed away in 1868, but the following year, she was remembered for the compassion and bravery she showed in the most devasting event in the community’s history. To honor her legacy, the Wissahickon Station was renamed Ambler Station, and 20 years later, the Village of Wissahickon also changed its name to Ambler.
