The Famous Reading Railroad
If you think you may have heard of the Reading Railroad before, it’s because you probably have! This railroad system, stationed in Reading, Pennsylvania, was made famous by Monopoly with a property spot on the board.
It's the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum's job to keep the memory of this world-famous railroad alive. With an outdoor display yard and an up-close history of the railroad indoors, visitors can learn everything there is to know about the cars, people, and services that made this railroad so successful in its day.
Unfortunately, attracting interest from younger generations can be difficult. With a Reading Railroad-inspired skateboard, the heritage museum hopes that changes.
New Skateboard Design Inspired by the Reading Railroad
Because the Reading area is known for the Reading Skatepark today, especially among younger generations, creating a skateboard is the perfect marriage between old and new.
The inspiration came when Jon Coles and his father saw another skateboard design that featured an old Contrail locomotive. They took the idea and created a board with the Historical Society of Berks County that features both the iconic green and yellow Reading Railroad caboose, as well as a map of the railroad line.
One board is on display at the museum, but the skateboard is fully functional, so 50 boards have been created and are being sold at the Holistic Skateshop in West Reading. The board cost $60, with $5 of each sale being donated to the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, so future generations can learn about and appreciate this famous railroad line.
