Dedication of the Jim Thorpe Bridge

On June 11th, 2018, the new Mansion House Bridge connecting the Delaware & Lehigh Trail to Downtown Lehigh Valley was dedicated. Nearing completion, the sturdy steel truss pedestrian bridge spans 250-ft of the Lehigh River. Its wooden walkway finally gives travelers using the trail a chance to visit downtown Jim Thorpe for sightseeing and to, potentially, patronize local businesses for rest and relaxation before continuing along the bike trail.

This $4.1 million project connects one of the last remaining gaps along the D&L Trail so that travelers can move freely between Carbon, Luzerne, and Lehigh counties.

Transforming the Trail into a River Walk

At present, there are about 20 public and private organizations looking at plans to develop a seven mile stretch of the D&L Trail in Lehigh Valley. Strategies include ideas for recreation, entertainment, and improvement of the local natural resources.

A lead official on the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission compared the potential of this trail to the San Antonio River Walk. The commission believes, that once completed, this development could be worth over $100 million in recreational and entertainment income. The goal is to attract more than double the 500,000 visitors who use the trail each year.

In order to do this, the lead official on the planning commission felt it would be vital to plan the river walk to 'evolve and change along the with the character of the trail'. Presently, some areas of the trail remain pristine, while others are undergoing intense development. Appropriate recreational planning will help draw tourists and overnight visitors to the area for the scenery and the local entertainment.
