Willingboro Township is located in Burlington County, New Jersey, and has a population of just over 32,000 as of the most recent count, and an average household income of $95,477.
Willingboro was incorporated in 1798 and is one of the oldest townships in the state. Willingboro also had a somewhat confusing and controversial history. In the mid-19th century, many communities in this part of New Jersey were impacted by the birth of housing developments that led to a huge population growth starting in the 1950s.
A massive housing development was done by Levitt and Sons, their third and largest “Levittown” development. A population of just 852 people in 1950 grew to over 43,000 by 1970! The town’s name was even changed from Willingboro to Levittown Township in 1959. This caused serious confusion, as Levitt & Sons had already developed a large housing project just over the border in Levittown, PA, only 12 miles away. Four years later, the township narrowly voted to change the name back to Willingboro Township, much to the chagrin of the owner of Levitt and Sons, William Levitt.
Similar to Levittown, PA, where the names of the streets within Levitt’s developments uniformly begin with the same letter that begins the name of the section in question, Willingboro is divided into several sections, called “parks,” and each section’s street names begin with the same letter as the corresponding section name. Obviously, this plan offered a good clue as to where any particular street might be located. Almost every park (15), within Willingboro Township has this same concept.
Willingboro is also known for its natural beauty and mature trees, and over 178 acres of recreational park space, most of these separate from the housing “parks,” including Willingboro Lakes Park, Fairmont Park, Broido Park, a 20-acre lake named Crystal Lake, and Millcreek Park. Millcreek Park is the "Flag Ship" of the Willingboro Park System, named after the creek that flows adjacent to the 180 acres of wooded and open space land. The Rancocas Creek also flows behind the park and gives it a very picturesque sight. The park is home to many festivals, tennis tournaments, sledding in the winter, a hiking trail, and a stocked fishing pond.
A little-known fact about Willingboro is that it was a haven for wrestlers, with famous pro wrestlers Jimmy Valiant and Gorilla Monsoon, pro wrestling referees Joey Marella and Mike Chioda, and amateur champion James Green all hailing from the area.
