Founded by the Dutch in colonial times, Somerville was named after William, John, James, and Edward Somerville who settled the town in the 1750's. At first a small village with a courthouse, church, and tavern, Somerville began to thrive after the American Revolution and many of its impressive buildings and structures still stand today. For example, the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage have played an integral role in the town's history and are both on the National Register of Historic Places in Somerset County.
The Wallace House was the headquarters of General George Washington throughout the winter of 1778-1779. Washington also later used the house for official dinners, planning military strategy, and hosting foreign dignitaries. The Old Dutch Parsonage was built in 1751 and first occupied by Reverend John Frelinghuysen. Jacob Rutsen Hardenbergh, who occupied the house after Frelinghuysen's death, played a fundamental role in establishing Queen's College which is now known as Rutgers University. Other notable landmarks include the Duke Gardens and the Robert Mansion.
Somerville is home to many famed buildings but also hosts a respectable list of famous individuals as well. For example, Western action star Lee Van Cleef was born and raised here. Van Cleef acted in more than 90 movies including The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, High Noon, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
