Founded in 1688, Somerset County is one of the oldest counties in America. It is the fourth wealthiest county per capita income in the United States, and has a population of 323, 444.
Somerset County played an important role in the American Revolution, as Washington and the Continental Army camped here for two winters during the war. Fittingly, Somerset County has many Revolutionary War historical sites, including the Jacobus Vanderveer House, the home of a prominent local family and the headquarters of General Henry Knox of the Continental Army; Old Stone Arch Bridge, an impressive 80-foot bridge and the site of a portion of the 1777 Battle of Bound Brook; and the Van Horne House, also located in the immediate vicinity of the Battle of Bound Brook and later used by Generals Lincoln and Lee. There's also a great deal of living history in Somerset County – every April the popular Annual Battle of Bound Brook Weekend is held by dedicated re-enactors. New Jersey residents more interested in the natural world will enjoy the Rose Day at the Rudolph W. van der Goot Rose Garden, with its display of over 3,000 roses, and the Garden State Wine Grower's Association's annual Blues & Wine Festival. There's also the Village at Bridgewater Commons, an upscale shopping center, and the United States Golf Association Museum for sports enthusiasts.
