Originally the Colonial Opera House, it became a preeminent venue of vaudeville, movies, traveling shows, and live entertainment throughout the 20th century. The theatre was immortalized in the minds of all horror enthusiasts in the classic science fiction movie, The Blob. Starring Steve McQueen, it was filmed in Phoenixville and three surrounding towns, and the pivotal scene is where the creature known as “The Blob” oozes through the walls of the projection room, via the projector openings. A commemorative plaque is located on the real wall of the theatre that reads: “Through this wall in the year 1958 Shorty Yeaoworth’s THE BLOB brought the monster into the movie theater and Phoenixville’s COLONIAL THEATRE into the annals of film history.”
