Perkasie is located about 20 miles from Allentown, and approximately 30 miles from Northwest Philadelphia. With a population of almost 9,300, Perkasie is a hidden gem, nestled among rolling hills and pastures and the town offers incredible views that cannot be seen anywhere else in Bucks County. It is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The history of the town includes two devastating fires that shape current-day Perkasie. In 1890, a huge fire began at the Livery Stable at 7th and Chestnut Street and 12 buildings were destroyed. Buckets and ladders were used to attempt to oust the fire until the nearest fire company arrived from nearby Sellersville almost 3o minutes later. The great news that came out of the fire is that less than a month later, the Perkasie Borough Council formed the Hope Fire Company and adopted a Constitution and By-Laws. Soon after a hand pumper, a hose cart with 800 feet of hose, and a locomotive tire iron used as a fire alarm were purchased. Today the Perkasie Fire Company still exists, and is a vital asset to the community with over 50 highly trained volunteers!
In 1988, a 2nd massive fire occurred on a windy Sunday afternoon. This became known as The Great Perkasie Fire The fire was started by 2 “neighborhood boys” who were playing with a lighter near the coal bins at Shelley’s building at Seventh and Market Streets. They quickly spread and over 6 hours destroyed approximately 15 % of the town, and burned down many of Perkasie’s iconic buildings. It took about 300 firefighters and over 50 fire companies to put out the blaze with 16 people hospitalized and 2 Perkasie Fire Department trucks west. Once again, the community spirit of Perkasie rose, and the downtown Restoration Task Force was formed. The focus of the task force was to oversee the reconstruction of the town center affected by the fire and for an improvement plan for retail and residential areas in the central part of the town. As a result of this, decorative street lights, and underground utilities sidewalks with decorative brick borders were built, along with new benches, trash receptacles, and street trees were placed throughout the area. This community spirit still exists today.
Another important part of Perkasie’s history is its annual Christmas Tree Lighting. It is America’s oldest Christmas Tree Lighting and began way back in 1909! The annual lighting features horse-drawn carriages, readings from “ The Polar Express”, a “Food Truck Court” with over 15 vendors, a Nostalgic Train Display, stilt walkers and an acrobatic show, holiday songs and carols performed, and the grand finally – Santa and Mrs. Claus ride in on a shiny red Perkasie Electric Truck to light the tree.
Perkasie has a community spirit that is 2nd to none!
