Northampton County was formed in 1752 from part of neighboring Bucks County. It is located at the juncture of two important American rivers: the Lehigh, which flows south and east from the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania, and the Delaware, one of the important rivers of the American frontier, which flows south from New York into the Delaware Bay at Philadelphia. Northampton County was home to the famous Bethlehem Steel, the largest steel manufacturer in North America and one of the largest in the world, until it’s closure in 2003. The area is very fortunate to be rich in higher education, as Lafayette College, Lehigh University, and Moravian College all are located in Northampton County.
