Roberts, President of the Pennsylvania Railroad, opened the Schuylkill Valley Division of the railroad. 3 of these stations were located in Lower Merion, with the first one named Bala, as Robert’s ancestors came from Bala in the Lake region of Wales. The Cynwyd station was named after the village of Cynwyd in Wales. The rail line helped develop these 2 towns, and by 1913 the Pennsylvania Railroad called Bala and Cynwyd “ one of the most rapidly growing suburbs of Philadelphia”. The United States Postal Service serviced both towns and assigned both of them the same zip code, so years later the 2 were combined.

This evolved into the legendary Buck Rodgers, which in its heyday appeared in over 200 newspapers, and was a syndicated comic strip from 1929 to 1967! “Buck Rogers “ also transformed into a radio show, movie serial, television series, and eventually a computer game.
