Reading, PA was established in 1748 and was named after the town of Reading in Berkshire, England. Reading is the 5th largest city in Pennsylvania, with a population of almost 87,000. The city sits in a perfect location, almost halfway between Philadelphia and the state capital of Harrisburg and halfway between the cities of Allentown and Lancaster.
This location made Reading a major transportation route that eventually led to the development of the famous Monopoly board landing, the Reading Railroad. While not originally named the Reading Railroad, it was one of the first railroads in the United States and became profitable almost immediately. By 1871, it was the largest company in the world, and it may have been the first conglomerate in the world also! The railroad was constructed to haul anthracite coal from the mines in northeastern Pennsylvania to Philadelphia. Reading Railroad prospered for over 140 years until the decline of anthracite coal and the onset of the modern trucking industry.
The Evolution of Reading through the Modern Age
The city of Reading has evolved over the years. The large Schuylkill River winds through the city, and because of that, much of the commerce was focused on the downtown area, especially the Penn Street corridor. Several large businesses, restaurants, banks, and government agencies were there. On the other edge of Penn Street were the fabulous Vanity Fair Outlets. This huge expanse of outlet stores was widely known for its vast array of clothes and other items at greatly reduced prices. In its heyday, it drew scores of shoppers from hundreds of miles away. The downtown area fell on hard times over the years, as some of the large businesses pulled out and Vanity Fair closed its original location.
There is great news on several fronts though when looking towards the future of this city!
The Reading area branched out over the years, and the suburbs have seen significant population growth and an increase in big businesses, as well as an increase in warehouse and distribution centers due to its strategic location. The downtown area has seen a revitalization also. The opening of the fantastic GoogleWorks Center for the Arts led to the revitalization. About 250,000 people visit this large arts and culture center throughout the year. A new restaurant and bar have been added, and entertainment and dining events are frequently held there. In addition, renowned retailer Albert Boscov opened a gorgeous 208-room hotel, the DoubleTree Hotel. The original Vanity Fair Outlets were torn down, and several large businesses are now tenants at the site, including Teleflex, UGI, two medical centers, and a restaurant. Vanity Fair reopened its famous outlets in a modernized site just a short distance away.
When you look back on the rich past of Reading and its continued growth in the modern age, it’s easy to see that the city will continue to thrive and prosper for many years ahead.
